It seems clear that the man we originally knew as Matt Barker is actually John F Barker Jr, birth date 11/21/1977. He may also have used the names Jack Barker, John Quaglia, or combinations thereof, according to people from whom we have heard.

Update: June 17, 2008

We have reason to believe that John Barker may be in Kennesaw, Georgia. Here is the phone number where he might be reached if you need him: (678) 354-1390. (alternate format for search engines: 6783541390). Apparently, cases are still pending against this man. For those of you who have been “touched” by Mr. Barker, please check the docket mentioned below for the latest charges and legal goings-on.

If you click on the button for Criminal Case Docket and accept the terms, you may search for him by name. I found multiple criminal cases and extensive charges dating back to 2000. I am not quite clear on legal lingo, but it seems he has posted bail. We are crossing our fingers that this man will now be held accountable. Sadly, the theft of our fan was nothing compared to the other events about which we have since heard.

It is hard to keep up with this guy! For the last couple weeks, I (Joan) have heard from several new victims in the United States and the situations are getting more and more serious. Below are some snippets from emails I have received, posted here in hopes of attracting more people who might be of help to the prosecution. By the way, it seems that he may be a paraplegic now, though explanations of why vary dramatically.

From an email received 8/16:

“Just wanted to give you some additional information for you to share, the prosector that lifted John Barker’s warrants called me, he said that John was in a wheelchair and had an attorney...in Cleveland lift the warrants so that his family could get him back here safely. I started laughing so hard and told him that he wouldn’t show. I have a call in to his supposed attorney [attorney name and numbers deleted but available upon request] to find out if, in fact, he is representing John Barker.

“Just to open some more doors I am going to [...] get some attention so that more people can come forward, because I am certain there are plenty more victims out there....he has to be stopped!”

From another email 8/16, different person/victim of Mr. Barker:

“WE ARE NOT GOING TO ALLOW THIS TO REST...HE [John Barker] ALSO OBTAINED A NOTARY PUBLIC STAMP AND SEAL FROM ‘AMERICAN ASSOCITION OF NOTARIES’....WEB SITE notarypublicstamps.com/contact.asp AND BILLED [THE VICTIM]!!! Info as follows (I also have his notary seal and stamp on a paper he ‘notarized’ !! It indicates John Barker notary public Fulton County Georgia...[and says] ‘my commission expires 02-17-2011’...” They billed [the victim] for his membership (means nothing) and stamp and seal -- on Monday 02-19-07 and mailed it to his Wood Trail Altanta address....

...I CHECKED WITH THE FULTON COUNTY GEORGIA [CLERK] OF SUP COURT AND THE PERSON ANSWERING INQUIRIES RE: NOTARIES HAS NO RECORD OF A JOHN BARKER EVERY RECEIVING A COMMISSION FOR NOTARY!!!”

Paraphrased from a fire department in the U.S., received via email 8/16:

‘Matt’ had solicited in Jan 2005 for fire equipment for the San Jose Del Cabo Fire Dept [Mexico]. We were able to donate some old rigs. Another nearby department heard about our donation and offered up some outdated SCBA and misc equipment. One of the items, a bus, broke down in another state on its way to Mexico and was discovered by the highway patrol who had it towed. It was traced back to our dept. Speaking with Matt 3 or 4 months later, he informed me that he was getting married. When asked about the towing invoice of about $350, he said he took care of it in cash and would call to clear it up. That was the last I heard from him. So our department ended up picking up the towing charges.

Matt said he was on the Chicago FD and had gone off to war and come back and couldn’t deal with it any more and headed south to Mexico.

From an anonymous email received May 11, 2006:

“I live in Tofo, Inhambane, Mozambique where Matt lived and worked since December 2005. He then opened a Clinic East African Medical Centre and used the following e-mail addresse astafricanmedicalcentre@yahoo.com. Matt left here on Tuesday 25th April telling everyone that his dad was very ill in the USA and that he would be back in two weeks time. So far he has not been back and we have heard that he will not be back at all - he apparently flew out of Inhambane in a private plane that was supposed to have belonged to the Clinic”

On this same topic, an email received September 11, 2007:

“I think it is important that you post the information that Mr Barker’s activities in Mozambique masquerading as a ’trauma Doctor’ resulted in the death of a dive related accident victim. He evacuated the victim (A Spanish national) by aircraft to South Africa and from the information at hand, ... a lack of medical skills and knowledge contributed to the death of this individual. Unfortunately as no one was able to apprehend him at the time no further action has taken place….. ”

An email received May 9, 2006:

“Alo! sorry but this guy must be cacked as quik as possible, he is in africa, lust month in mozambique, stealing the pour people, he open a clinic in tofo beach the turist province of mozambique work as a docter for 3 month, in this time he flu out every tourist who ha no reasen to fly, couse this country is not so bad with the medical tretment , all iligal, the pepers was iligal, and he is still around,. so tell me what i have to do if i see him next time, couse im sure he will still come becouse my country is not agressiv and the people are still verey passive, and they forget quiqly about anything, and im sure he know that, he might come back.... sorry my inglesh but i just want to help..... regards”

Update: May 8, 2007

A South African wrote to us in April (my apologies for not being able to update this page sooner) to thank us for this page and add some information on Matt. Here is the information that person provided:

• A passport was seen with the name Matthew J Barker on it that showed his age in 2006 to be 26.
• At that time, he was setting up a clinic in Mozambique which was financed by South Africans and he claimed to be a 31-year old surgeon. He fooled everyone for quite some time but has no training as a doctor, only as a paramedic.
• He has a tattoo of a woman on his calf and another tattoo on his back which is quite large and commemorates the firefighters of 9/11/01.
• Height: 5 foot 10 inches, weight: 200 lbs
• Address: 268 Adams, Chicago [update August 13, 2007 - he may also have addresses in Atlanta, Georgia and may be wanted in several states!]
• Drivers license #36481 and Social Security Number XXX-XX-6724
• From a card having to do with “EMT: Northeast Ohio Affiliate, Robert Adlard:”
  • Birth certificate: Fairview General, Ohio, Lakewood, Cuyahoga
  • Address at the time: 21245 Corain Road, Fairview Park, Ohio*
    [Note: Google suggested Corner Road instead of Corain]
  • Parents: Linda S Barker and John F Barker

If anyone has any more information on this man, please contact us. We do not wish to hound his parents or relatives, just put a stop to Matt or John or Jack or whomever he is to prevent further victims of his scams!

Update: March 22, 2007 We just received a call from yet another victim in the fire/rescue industry. Matt Barker may actually be John Barker, or more specifically, John F. Barker, Jr! It appears that Matt J. Barker may actually be the name of John’s brother. It is all so complicated. By the way, we received an email from “Matt” at mjb8977@yahoo.com in May of 2006. He threatened to involve an attorney if we did not stop defaming him. However, he never responded when we invited him to do so. The names Matt and John are used interchangeably on this page because he has used both. His real name is probably John Frederick Barker Junior.

Recent

January 2007: We notice in our web traffic reports from December 2006 that this web page is still being found by Google users. This is good because it means Matt Barker / John Barker Jr. might still be stopped by some curious person in the world before he/she becomes a victim! What is interesting about the reports is that people - or probably one person - uses the search words matt, matthew, barker, John, and combinations thereof and they are using the Google home pages for Mexico, Chile, Malaysia, the United Kingdom, and Canada as well as the plain old Google.com page to do so. Do you suppose it is John himself, checking to see if he can still be found from various places in the world? Yes, Mr. Barker, you can be caught, thanks to Google and the Internet!

Matt James Barker may be in on multiple scams involving fire/rescue/EMS equipment and medical services! Matt Barker has used these email addresses:

Since posting this page, we have received correspondence from many people indicating that Matthew James Barker (Matthew J Barker) may be passing himself off as a trauma surgeon or a doctor in Africa.

We were told he does have a Paramedic License and he was trained by the U.S. Army Medical Corps as a field medic.

Original events that caused us to post this page:

Matthew Barker (also called Matt Barker and probably in reality named John Barker), ex-Division Chief of the San Jose del Cabo Bomberos ordered a VENTRY PPV Fan in April 2005. The fan has never been paid for or been returned, as Matt claimed to have arranged. The San Jose del Cabo Fire Department says Matt left not on good terms and took equipment with him; Matt claims that the Fire Department is at fault. All we know is that neither one has honorred the committment made.

If you have any information regarding Matt Barker’s whereabouts (or that of the fan), please contact us so we may provide additional information to the authorities. We are grateful that such dealings are unusual in our many years of experience with the fire service, and hope that he is stopped soon.
